MISCONSEPTIONS AND FACTS About Rescue Dogs
PLEASE REMEMBER NO DOG WAS EVER BORN, OR ASKED TO GO INTO RESCUE WE AS HUMANS PUT THEM IN THAT POSITION.
All rescue dogs have major behavioural problems MISCONCEPTION
FACT Many dogs in rescues have been normal family pets but there has been a change in the domestic circumstances of the owners (for example moving into a flat, divorce, illness etc) which means that they can no longer keep the dog.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
WE DONT know the past history of a rescue dog. MISCONCEPTION
FACT Many dogs come directly from homes to the rescue, WE will ask all the relevant questions of the previous owners, then keep the dog with us, while it goes under our own assessment . And this information will be passed on to any prospective new owner.
………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Rescue dogs are emotionally damaged and incapable of loving or being loved MISCONCEPTION
FACT THIS IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION, RESCUE’S ARE LIKE ANY OTHER DOGS THEY LOVE UNCONDITIONLY .Dogs have a huge capacity to love and be loved. I have seen many badly abused dogs, AND RESCUED ONE PERSONALY, and they never cease to amaze me. They seem to know that you mean them no harm and will give YOU the chance to prove yourself to them.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………..
DOGS WHO HAVE BEEN ABUSED BY HUMANS
It seems that they realise how lucky they are now, and appreciate your kindness even more than other dogs. MISCONCEPTION
FACT WE ARE THE LUCKY ONES WHO ARE PRIVALIGED TO OWN THEM . ALL WE CAN DO IS TO TRY AND PROVE TO THEM THAT NOT ALL HUMANS WILL TREAT THEM LIKE OBJECTS TO BE ABUSED
For me it is incredibly rewarding to feel that I have made a positive difference to a dog’s life just by giving them the time, space and love to allow them to mend.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
All rescue dogs are adults or elderly. MISCONCEPTION
FACT Some puppies are actually born in rescues – The moms having been cast out when the owner realises they are pregnant. Responsible owners will ensure that their dog cannot suffer an unplanned pregnancy . The responsible thing is to have your dog spayed or neutered .We here at Z.R.R are the only registered rottweiler charity to have this policy written into our constitution . We actively support spaying and neutering campaigns by offering help and advice to those who need it ,along with spaying and neutering the dogs in our care before adoption takes place .
…………………………………………………………………………………………………
All rescue dogs are mongrels MISCONCEPTION
FACT Purebred dogs end up in rescues for the same reasons as crossbreeds and mongrels. Most breeds will have a breed rescue that is dedicated to them .
BUT PLEASE Don’t dismiss the crossbreed or mongrel they need loving homes just as much as the pure breeds, and will make lovely family pets too. and mongrels are all unique, come in all shapes and sizes and are true individuals.
………………………………………………………………………………………………
All rescue dogs are riddled with disease and fleas. MISCONCEPTION
FACT Most rescues will have the dogs routinely checked out by a vet, we here at Z.R.R will have the dogs vaccinated, wormed ,spayed/neutered and micro chipped etc before putting the dog up for re-homing. Good Rescues do not want to add to the problem of yet more unwanted dogs or strays – so they do all they can to prevent this from happening. People get involved with Z.R.R because they want to help the dogs to find loving new homes and to get a better life. We do not allow breeders or kennel owners to serve on the committee or be trustees of the charity , we do not own kennels, we rent a series of holding kennels. This of course takes funding and Z.R.R as a non profit charity and run by dedicated volunteers rely on fundraising and donations to carry on the work we do.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
RESCUE CENTERS
They are desperate to get rid of the dogs so will lie about the dogs just to get them homes. OR offer you no backup after you have taken the dog home. And are just in it for the money and will sell anyone any dog just to get your cash. MISCONCEPTION
FACT We are of course keen to see dogs in their own loving homes, but this must be in the dogs best interest , not just any home – it needs to be the right home .
Most rescues will take a dog back if the new family doesn’t work out. If a rescue does not offer this then you need to question why, and maybe go to a different rescue. We here at Z.R.R never sell dogs we only ever ask for a donation which goes to help us continue to rescue other dogs that need our help .
There are lots of brilliant rescues out there – both large and small, but there are also some dodgy ones. Don’t judge a rescue simply by what it looks like but rather by what it is trying to do.
